He completed a Masters degree in the field of Impaction Bone Grafting from which he was awarded multiple prizes and publications. Mr Burston qualified from the University of Bristol in 2000 with Honours in Medicine and with a 1st class honours degree in Anatomical Sciences.
He undertook his basic surgical training rotation in Oxford, before undertaking an invaluable year as an orthopaedic registrar in New Zealand. On his return Mr Burston was selected at Bristol for his 6-year higher surgical training rotation in Trauma and Orthopaedics.
Following becoming a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2010, Mr Burston secured prestigious fellowships in Perth, Australia and at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
He took up his consultant post at the world renowned Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in January 2013.
Mr Burston is widely published in peer review journals, mainly in the field of hip replacement surgery. He is the principal investigator in a number of national research trials.
He enjoys teaching, serving as faculty on many national and international courses and has a Diploma in Medical Education from the University of Bristol.
In 2019 he was selected as the sole British representative for the American Hip Society prestigious Rothman-Ranawat travelling fellowship. This six week venture took him to 10 centres of excellence across North America. Here he was able to interact and share knowledge with some of the world’s most prominent specialists in adult joint reconstruction, further developing his practice. He lectured in each site on some of his work covering prosthetic joint infection.
He currently sits on a national advisory panel for the development of revision hip networks.

Professor Gill completed a first degree in Aerospace Engineering and initially worked in the aerospace industry. He developed an interest in bioengineering and undertook a PhD in Orthopaedic Mechanics. He has spent over 20 years working in a mixed clinical/research environment and was the Group Head of the Oxford Orthopaedic Engineering Centre from 2001 until 2012, when he moved to the University of Bath.

He is currently on the Executive Committees of the British Orthopaedic Research Society and the European Orthopaedic Research Society, and a member of the Editorial Board of the Bone and Joint Journal

Jonathan Jeffers is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and the Associate Dean for Enterprise in the Engineering faculty.

He works at the interface of engineering and medicine with a vision to improve surgical treatment of osteoarthritis through research. His career has several crossovers between industry and academia. He is currently on sabbatical to OSSTEC Ltd, a start-up company that is using additive manufacturing to create bone health preserving knee implants. In 2019 he co-founded Additive Instruments, a company that created a battery powered surgical impactor tool that was acquired in 2023. Prior to that, he was part of the Embody Orthopaedic ceramic hip resurfacing design team – this implant was CE marked in 2024 and is now being commercially launched across Europe. Before he started at Imperial, he learnt medical device product development at Finsbury Orthopaedics where he was inspired to pursue a career in this sector.

…He qualified at Birmingham University where he was awarded the esteemed RH Sage Award for the best surgical trainee of the year. Through his work with the Birmingham hip resurfacing he was awarded the first ever large research bursary from the British Hip Society, leading to a number of landmark research papers, national prizes and the award of a higher degree from the University of Birmingham. He completed his fellowship in Sydney with one of the world leaders in hip surgery in young patients. In 2010 Mr McBryde was successfully awarded the prestigious European Travelling fellowship by the British Hip Society.

Mr McBryde specialises in all the conditions that cause hip pain and practices exclusively in young adult hip surgery.

…the prestigious Bristol Advanced Hip fellowship and was nationally selected as the TIG Major Trauma fellow to work alongside the military in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. He was also honored to be selected as the OTA Traveling fellow to work in Tampa, USA where he worked alongside leading American trauma surgeons and trained in robotic joint replacement surgery.

He runs the “early arthritis research unit” and is an honorary clinic lecturer at Cardiff University where he undertook his doctorate in the Bio-medical and Bio-engineering Institute. He has a specialist research interest in novel injectable drugs that can be used to prevent or slow the development of arthritis such as PRP, hydrogels and DMOADs.

Mr Miller has published papers on the benefit of partial knee replacements and potential therapeutic drug targets to prevent arthritis in addition to editing revision textbooks for doctors in training.

Michael undertook his undergraduate medical training at the University of Bristol qualifying in 2001. He continued his training in Oxford and the South East before returning to Bristol to complete his higher surgical training. He completed his Doctorate in Medicine in 2012 and was previously appointed as an NIHR clinical lecturer in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Bristol. He has completed fellowship training in lower limb arthroplasty in Vancouver and orthopaedic oncology here in Birmingham. Michael began working at the ROH in 2014 and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Aston.

Michael’s specialist interests are in orthopaedic oncology and lower limb arthroplasty, with a particular interest in the management of infected joint replacements. Michael has published extensively in these fields and has continued to develop his research interests in both oncology and revision lower limb arthroplasty. He regularly presents at national and international conferences on behalf of the ROH and is a reviewer for a number of renowned orthopaedic journals.

He has a keen interest in young adult hip conditions and is one of the UK’s most experienced surgeons using the latest technology to achieve the best possible outcome for patients.

Peers, both locally and nationally, regularly refer to him for hip arthroscopy. He is a world-renowned specialist in young adult hip problems and his groundbreaking research has been recognised on a global scale after he received two of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy’s annual awards in New York and Paris. He has expanded the understanding of how hips fail in young adults and how they should be studied and treated by authoring many of the most important articles in the field of young adult hip surgery.

He is very passionate about his patients’ return to sport and encourages them to remain active after surgery, championing our Rapid Recovery Programme. Many of his arthroplasty (joint replacement surgery) patients return to sports like running, racquet sports, and skiing after surgery.

He graduated in medicine from the University of Bristol. At the University of Oxford, he earned his medical doctorate (MD) by writing a thesis on the causes, investigation, and treatment of early hip osteoarthritis and later held the distinguished position of Clinical Lecturer in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery. He gained his Fellowship at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, where he joined the trust as a permanent Consultant in 2012 and started in private practice.

He received a level 2 Clinical Excellence award in recognition of his service to the NHS and was appointed Clinical Director of the Department of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in February 2017. During the Covid pandemic, he successfully led a department of 21 orthopaedic surgeons to be one of the first in the UK to begin elective surgery and the approach he established to do so safely was published for other hospitals to follow.

He is an extremely popular lecturer and teacher on hip arthroscopy courses in the UK and internationally. He trains Fellows in hip arthroscopy as part of a Smith & Nephew-sponsored fellowship programme based at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. He allows consultant surgeons to check his hip arthroscopy skills in person by participating in a visiting surgeon programme.

He has extensive experience in hip replacement surgery and is renowned in his field for expertise in performing challenging, complex hip and minimally invasive surgery (MIS) where his passion for perfection and a desire to aim for excellent patient outcomes and improved prosthesis survival is his key objective.

Innovation is at the heart of his work and he co–designed the Exceed ABT Acetabular system. He is also co-designer of the patented Exceed ABT 15° Face Changing Cup with Biomet Inc. This cup represents a shift away from conventional thinking in the treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip as it requires the surgeon to position the acetabular shell in the hip socket and at the same time alters the liner bearing surface into an improved position to reduce wear.

He manages a research programme based on his hip surgery and this carries forward into his role as a chairperson and regular speaker at international conferences where his expertise in all aspects of hip surgery is transferred and debated.

Mr Niall Sullivan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Hip and Trauma Surgeon. He completed his specialist Orthopaedic training in the Severn Deanery and was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2017. He went on to complete fellowship training in advanced hip replacement and revision surgery in Auckland, NZ and in Bristol.

Mr Sullivan specialises in complex primary and revision hip surgery. Pathologies treated include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, metastatic cancer (hip/pelvis), trauma and developmental hip problems.

Having received awards during his training for his research, Mr Sullivan continues to work with University of Bristol researchers producing high quality stem cell research and studies on prosthetic joint infection. He also remains heavily involved in training and education of surgeons in the region and is the Health Education England Lead for Skills and Course for the Severn Deanery surgical training program.

Continuing his southward migration he was appointed as a Consultant in Health & Care Jersey, HCJ, in Jersey Channel Islands in 2023. At the same time he became Deputy Medical Director. In 2025 he was appointed as Medical Director for HCJ and responsible officer.

…his research focuses on the treatment of osteoarthritis, outcomes of joint replacement, adverse events such as the treatment of PJI, hip fracture, open fractures and cartilage damage. He employs a wide range of research methodologies including multicentre randomised controlled trials, first-in-human trials, analysis of large routinely collected healthcare datasets, evidence synthesis, qualitative methods and health economics. He leads the NJR lot 2 contract for Statistical Analysis, Support and Associated Services and a range of NIHR funded studies investigating bearings in THR, optimisation for surgery, intra-articular injections, novel devices and treatments for cartilage damage and infection. Mike has published over 300 peer reviewed papers, 11 NJR annual reports, and obtained grant funding of £9.4 million as lead and a further £17.2 million as co-applicant. He sits on the British Orthopaedic Association research committee and chairs the British Hip Society research committee.
