Abtin was appointed as NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford in 2015, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in 2017. He undertook two post-CCT sub-specialist clinical fellowships focusing on complex hip and knee surgery in Oxford (NOC) and Stanmore (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital). He was then appointed in Oxford as a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon. Professor Baker is the current lead for the national revision knee surgery programme and is supervising the current NJR fellow examining implant choice at revision surgery and the associated clinical outcomes.
Between 2018 and 2023 he was been the director for research and innovation at the South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, an executive member of the Tees Valley Research Alliance (TVRA) and the Research Design Service for North East and North Cumbria.
Professor Baker has undertaken a significant amount of research into the outcomes of patients undergoing hip and knee replacement procedures. He was the inaugral National Joint Registry (NJR) research fellow (2012) and has also been a visiting British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) ABC fellow (2018).
Professor Baker is a member of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) team and is the expert reviewer for their current early value assessment. In the past he has been the current Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) speciality lead for orthopaedics and has sat on the NIHR HTA commissioning panel, the BOA research committee and the RCS MSK RADAR group.
He is a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) grant holder leading a national studies that research how to help patients get back to work after hip and knee replacement surgery

He graduated from University of London (Imperial College School of Medicine) in 2003. He completed his surgical training in Oxfordshire, Leicester and Northamptonshire. …Knee Network based at the Royal Devon University Healthcare Trust in Exeter. She has been a registered nurse since 2005 and has worked in preparation for surgery and as a Matron in trauma and orthopaedics for over 10 years.
During her time as Matron she led a number of departments including fracture clinic, outpatients, an admissions and day case unit, rheumatology infusion service and separate elective and trauma inpatient wards. She has also worked as a senior nurse involved in setting up and leading the nursing workforce of an MSK injuries unit during COVID. More recently Amy was seconded to develop the staffing model and subsequent recruitment of the ward nursing workforce for the South West Ambulatory Orthopaedic Centre in Exeter.

In March 2022 Amy joined the Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit (EKRU) to work as a CNS in the Revision Knee Network. Amy has a keen interest in the infection side of revision surgery as she feels this is where patients need the most support both in terms of the psychological effects of living with a PJI but also with coordination of care and symptom management.

Amy is a non-medical prescriber and has completed a Masters in Advanced Professional Practice (Clinical Practitioner) and sits on the BAJIS Executive Committee and Research Committee as the nursing representative.

…including the Revision & Infection MDT. She brings with her a strong expertise coordinating complex clinical pathways from working within cancer services, helping to enhance patient outcomes and promote best practices across the region.

She has implemented changes within the MDT to improve the process and streamline ways of working. She continues to work with the revision units within the region to help their local MDT processes.

with a sub-specialist interest in partial, total and revision knee Arthroplasty. Amy read medicine at the University of Oxford, she has a masters in medical education and went on to complete a PhD at  Imperial College, London. Her research investigates the clinical outcomes and biomechanics of Compartmental Arthroplasty of the knee. Amy has reported a biomechanical advantage of medial and lateral unicompartmental arthroplasty, both in isolation and in combination, compared to posterior-cruciate retaining total knee arthroplasty. Amy’s cadaveric studies demonstrated that partial knee arthroplasty preserves nearer-native anterior posterior stability and extensor mechanism efficiency. In the gait laboratory, Amy has demonstrated that compartmental arthroplasty is associated with nearer-normal vertical ground reaction forces and high levels of patient satisfaction, compared to matched posterior-cruciate retaining total knee arthroplasty and healthy control subjects. To date, Amy has published more than 21 research papers. She has presented on 22 podiums across the world.

… Hospitals. He qualified from Sheffield Medical School in 1997 and was a higher surgical trainee in Sheffield and the surrounding area. Prior to his Consultant post, he trained as a Fellow with the highly respected Mr Andrew Manktelow and Mr Peter James in hip and knee replacement surgery at Nottingham University NHS Trust.

He is currently Chair of the Dr Foster Global Comparators Group; an organisation which promotes best practice in hip and knee surgery worldwide and is also the Clinical Lead for both Seamless Surgery and Technology Transformation at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

In 2012, he gained a PhD in immunobiology and genetic risk factors for aseptic loosening after total hip replacement. Work from his PhD has been awarded both National and International prizes including the William Harris Hip Award in the USA.

…(EKRU). She graduated from Cardiff University in 2005 and has enjoyed a varied career which has led to her most recent role in EKRU since 2021. Her experience and passion for managing patients with persistent and complex pain contributes to her role in supporting patients before and after arthroplasty and revision knee surgery. Liz has an MSc in Advanced Practice from Plymouth University (2024) and is an associate at The University of Exeter, currently contributing to research projects studying post operative knee stiffness, and working towards leading further research in this field.

…which hosts the North East Major Revision Centre. My practice is entirely devoted to knee arthroplasty (partial, total and revision) with a particular interest in problematic, painful and stiff total knee replacements. I undertook his medical training in Manchester, including a PhD in tendon biology, followed by orthopaedic training in Newcastle and Northumbria on the North East Rotation. During this period I was the British Association for Surgery of the Knee Research Fellow (2018-) and worked with BASK’s revision knee working group to drive the reorganisation of revision knee surgery in England. I undertook fellowship training in revision knee surgery in Exeter (2022-23, Prof Andy Toms and Mr Jon Phillips) and Oxford (2023-24, Mr Abtin Alvand and Prof Andy Price) before returning to the North East as a consultant in April 2024. To complement my clinical work, I continue to collaborate with research scientists in Newcastle University to improve our understanding of the development of stiffness after knee replacement and improve treatment for this challenging patient group. I was elected to the BASK Executive Committee in September 2024, and as Junior Member I hope to develop BASK’s appeal to trainees, fellows and young consultants and increase the number of trainee members through trainee specific sessions at BASK meetings.

He plays a key role in cutting-edge clinical research, including investigating meniscus prostheses aimed at delaying total knee arthroplasty  and contributing to the development of the MOTOR mobility-monitoring tool for personalized osteoarthritis care . A sought-after educator, he also contributes to advanced surgical training modules on knee instability, joint-line reconstruction, and revision arthroplasty accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

With a focus on complex, revision, and second opinion hip and knee procedures, Mr Miles’ specialist interests include partial and total knee replacement, total hip replacement, meniscal surgery and ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery.

He holds an elective NHS Consultant post at The Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust, where he is the Specialty Lead for Knee Surgery, previously having been Director for Elective Orthopaedics 2017 – 2020, Director for Trauma from 2008-2012. James is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Bristol Medical School.

James graduated from Cambridge University, underwent basic surgical training in Oxford before working in knee and hip research in Newcastle. He then entered orthopaedic specialist training in the Wessex Deanery and won the EndoPlus Knee Prize in 2005. In 2006, he spent a Fellowship year in Sydney, Australia at the internationally renowned Australian Institute of Musculoskeletal Surgery, gaining valuable experience in sports injuries and joint replacement surgery under the supervision of Merv Cross, whilst also spending time with Leo Pinczewski, David Wood and Justin Roe. That same year he was awarded the British Association of Surgery for the Knee travelling fellowship.

James has a keen research and training interest having written numerous published peer-reviewed papers (over 60) and his first book, A to Z of Musculoskeletal and Trauma Radiology, which was published in June 2008. He is also a current reviewer for scientific journals, including the Bone and Joint Journal and The Knee, having previously reviewed for Injury, Acta Orthopaedica and Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. James leads on a number of trials and contributes to others as a co-investigator; he works closely with his colleagues as a member of the Bristol Knee Group which carries out research and teaching related to knee surgery both in the UK and internationally. He is a member of both national (BASK Working Groups for Meniscus, ACL Prevention, Arthroplasty and Revision Knee Surgery) and international collaborative consensus groups (International Consensus Meeting for Prosthetic Joint Infection 2018). James is the current BASK (British Association of Surgery for the Knee) Education Representative, sitting on the BASK Executive since March 2019.

His extensive experience has enabled him to offer a comprehensive knee service from ligament reconstruction, meniscal and cartilage surgery, osteotomy, partial, total and revision knee replacement. He leads the Bristol service for prosthetic joint infection of the knee, which runs via a multidisciplinary team at Southmead Hospital. He is well-known to encourage early post-operative mobility with enhanced recovery techniques, such as minimally-invasive muscle-sparing knee joint replacement, avoidance of tourniquets and local anaesthetic infiltrative techniques.

James has a keen sporting interest, previously playing competitive squash, athletics and rugby, but now he tends to be more of a spectator, but still coaches rugby, plays recreational squash and loves skiing! He is also a keen pianist, playing anything from Blues to Classical.  He is married to a local GP at Bristol University Students’ Health Service and together they have three children.

…NHS trust. He is a high volume arthroplasty surgeon undertaking approximately 200 hip and knee replacements annually. He has completed revision arthroplasty fellowships in Coventry and Nottingham as well as a sarcoma fellowship at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford. He was a T&O registrar in the East Midlands Leicester Deanery. He has been an Associate Editor for the Bone and Joint Journal (2012-2016) and was the National Joint Registry/RCS fellow in 2013/14.

Jeya was awarded the BMA Doris-Hillier research grant in 2014/15 and awarded his PhD from the University of Leicester, looking into outcomes after hip and knee replacements. He has a specialist interest in the management of periprosthetic joint infections and fractures. Jeya has published over 50 peer reviewed scientific papers and presented extensively on hip and knee arthroplasty surgery both nationally and internationally. He was President of the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association (BOTA) in 2013/14. He is a member of the European Knee Society and European Hip Society, Orthopaedic Device Evaluation Panel (ODEP) and T&O ST3 National Selection Design Group. He is also the clinical lead for Trauma and Orthopaedics in the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT), representing the 6 main hospitals in West Yorkshire.

Mr Pickering undertook a sabbatical at the Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital Boston, USA, working with several internationally renowned knee arthroplasty surgeons. In addition he spent a year on fellowship in Brisbane, Australia, focusing on hip and knee arthroplasty, knee revision and sports medicine.

Mr Pickering has published, presented and taught nationally and internationally. He continues an active interest in research and teaching, working closely with industry on taking forwards innovation.

Mr Pickering has been a consultant working at the Royal Derby Hospital for 20 years. He performs over 350 arthroplasty procedures a year and is currently the MRC lead.

He is the current Treasurer for BASK as well as the President of the Grosvenor Orthopaedic Club and Managing Partner of the Bone and Joint Centre. He is an honorary clinical lecturer at The University of Liverpool and has a number of peer reviewed publications.

Alasdair Santini was a keen fencer, having been captain of The University of Sheffield  team but currently keeps fit by skiing and coaching junior rugby. He is a lifetime ticket holder of seats at Murrayfield so he can follow Scotland’s rugby internationals.

She was awarded the Hunter Doig medal by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2020. She is an advocate for diversity in surgery and is involved in diversity projects both in the UK and America and is a member of Pride Ortho.

Nicola began her academic journey with a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from Northumbria University (1998), followed by a BSc in Physiotherapy from the University of Huddersfield (2001). She is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and is a member of the Bone and Joint Infection Society (BAJIS) and the Association of Trauma and Orthopaedic Chartered Physiotherapists (ATOCP)
Since 2006, Nicola has specialised in orthopaedic physiotherapy, gaining extensive experience in elective orthopaedics, trauma, and rehabilitation. Her approach integrates hands-on therapy, exercise rehabilitation, and patient education, always aiming to treat the whole person and tailor interventions to individual goals and needs.
In addition to her clinical expertise, Nicola has a strong interest in research and evidence-based practice. She has served as a Principal Investigator on several physiotherapy and orthopaedic research trials, including AFTER, OPAL, and Outdoor Mobility trials, and has delivered interventions for the Hip Helper trial.
Nicola currently works as a Clinical Specialist within the North East and North Cumbria Revision Knee Network, collaborating with Orthopaedic Surgeons and the MDT co-ordinator. Together, they are developing a regional revision network to improve care pathways and outcomes for patients with problematic, infected, or failed knee replacements.
