Colyvas’ main research is in the field of meniscus preservation. He investigates cutting edge techniques in meniscus repairs, with the goal of preventing knee arthritis in the long term. He is also active in improving techniques for treating rotator cuff tears and biceps tendon problems.

Colyvas earned his medical degree at University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He then completed a fellowship as well as a residency in orthopedic surgery at UCSF.

Colyvas is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, where he serves on the practice management committee. Associate Professor D’Alessandro is orthopaedic surgeon to the Fremantle Dockers and West Coast Eagles, and consults to professional sporting organisations including Western Force, Perth Glory, Perth Wildcats, Perth Lynx, West Coast Fever, Hockey Australia and Athletics Australia. His work also extends to athletes in WA’s junior talent pathways and recreational sport, informed by his own background playing and coaching Australian Rules football.

His ligament research won the British Association of Surgery of the Knee President’s medal as well as awards at the French Arthroscopy Society and German Speaking Arthroscopy Society.

James has developed both instrumentation and techniques for arthroscopic surgery, and is regularly invited to lecture and teach internationally on aspects of sports knee surgery, such as ligament reconstruction, meniscal repair and osteotomy.

He has been a member of the Arthroscopy committee for ESSKA, chairman of the ESSKA Collateral ligaments Working Group and is currently the Co-chairman for the Sports Knee Preservation Committee for ISAKOS and is a member of the scientific committee of the international ACL Study Group. He is a reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine and the BJJ. He sits on the steering committee for the UK National Ligament registry.

Arthritis Research UK funding to undertake a pilot randomised control trial comparing meniscal allograft transplantation to non-operative treatment and subsequently completed a PhD in this area. He has authored several papers and won a number of prizes for his research in knee surgery, including the Robert Jones Medal this year.

…and sports medicine specialist from Lyon, France. In Sweden, he is perhaps best known as the doctor who operated on Zlatan Ibrahimović’s ACL injury.
Sonnery-Cottet has made significant contributions to the development of modern knee surgery, particularly in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

He has been a pioneer in research and practice regarding lateral extra-articular reconstructions (LET) in
combination with ACL reconstruction. This approach aims to improve knee joint stability and reduce the risk of re-injury, an essential aspect especially for high-level athletes.

Another key focus of his work is emphasizing the importance of addressing concurrent meniscus injuries during ACL surgeries, which is crucial for the long-term health and function of the knee joint.
In addition to his surgical expertise, Sonnery-Cottet earned a PhD with a dissertation on arthrogenic muscle inhibition, a condition where muscle function is adversely affected by joint injuries or inflammation. His research in this area has gained significant attention and contributed to a deeper understanding of rehabilitation following knee injuries.

He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles: some award-winning, as well as many other publications. A study of knee motion employing weight-bearing, ‘dynamic’ MRI was awarded The Hunterian Professorship by The Royal College of Surgeons of England for 2005-2006. Current focus is on the MCL after a period of work on the anterolateral soft tissues with relevance to ACL injury, and improving clinical outcomes in elite athletes. He was a lead editor of the 39th Edition of Gray’s Anatomy. His h-index is 46.

He sits on the Board of Directors of ISAKOS, and serves on their finance and knee: sports and preservation committees. He is second vice-president of The ACL Study Group and so will be president in 2030. He sits on the Editorial Board of The American Journal of Sports Medicine, and previously the Editorial Board of The Bone and Joint Journal, as well as The ESSKA Sports Committee. He was previously on the executive of The British Association for Surgery of The Knee. In 2002 he was awarded the ABC Travelling Fellowship. He was named in the UK’s Top 100 Doctors by the Times newspaper in 2011. He is the first UK member of The Herodicus Society, a U.S. sports surgery society
