Andrew graduated from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and underwent…

… his surgical and orthopaedic training in Bristol. He completed his specialist training in knee surgery with UK fellowships in Oxford, Exeter and Bristol.  In 2011, he undertook a fellowship in Sydney, Australia at the world-renowned Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Surgery where he gained valuable experience in sports injuries and joint replacement surgery under the supervision of Dr David Wood. At the same unit he was able to visit and gain further training with Dr Leo Pinczewski and Dr Merv Cross, both pioneers in arthroscopic knee ligament reconstruction.

Prior to commencing specialist orthopaedic training, Andrew undertook a 12-month clinical research fellow post based in Bristol, where he developed a keen interest in knee research. His enthusiasm for research and audit has led to numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and he has presented his research both nationally and internationally.

Andrew teaches nationally on soft tissue knee and arthroscopy courses; he is a committee member for the British Patellofemoral Society and is the course convenor for the Oswestry Sports Knee Meeting.

Andrew has a particular interest in arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, knee ligament reconstruction and partial knee replacement. Having spent twelve months training at Avon Orthopaedic Centre under Mr Jonathan Eldridge, he has developed expertise in this field.

Simon Barton

Simon Barton is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon specialising…

… in the treatment of disorders of the knee. His practice includes the management of sports injuries, anterior knee pain, patella instability and arthritis.

He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2005 and completed his early surgical training in the South East of Scotland, Western Australia and Yorkshire. His higher orthopaedic training was on the North West Rotation, and he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2015.

Simon’s sub-speciality expertise in knee surgery was gained through two UK based knee fellowships, at the Wrightington Sports Knee Unit and The Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Bristol.

Simon’s time in Bristol was focused on developing the expertise to manage complex disorders of the patellofemoral joint (instability and anterior knee pain). He is one of a handful of fellowship trained surgeon’s in the North of England able to offer the Bereiter trochleoplasty technique for the management of severe dysplasia. This condition, which results in recurrent dislocations of the patella, can only be effectively managed by deepening the groove at the end of the femur (trochlea). He offers a tertiary referral service for this and associated disorders of the patellofemoral joint at the Sports Knee Clinic, Wrightington.

Simon delivers a modern, patient specific approach to soft tissue injuries of the knee and is passionate about joint preserving solutions for arthritis. He performs a full spectrum of knee surgery from biological joint reconstruction, osteotomy and partial knee arthroplasty.

Simon has had a lifelong interest in sports and exercise, having played representative rugby into his 20s. In 2019 he was awarded a Masters in Sports and Exercise Medicine from Bath University for his research into the surgical management of patellar instability.

Jonathan Eldridge

Jonathan Eldridge joined University Hospitals Bristol and the Avon Orthopaedic…

… Centre as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in February 2002.

During the course of my Orthopaedic training as a University lecturer and specialist registrar in Bristol I gained extensive experience in general orthopaedic surgery, teaching and research. I developed an interest in lower limb surgery, and following a clinical sports knee fellowship with Dr David Wood at the North Sydney Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre in the Olympic year and a European Travelling Fellowship have continued to develop expertise in specialist surgery of the knee.  I have become an internationally renowned knee surgeon through many publications and am regularly invited to teach and lecture both nationally and internationally.

My clinical practice encompasses the entirety of knee surgery with particular expertise in patellofemoral instability, ligament reconstruction, compartmental replacement and joint preservation. The majority of my NHS practice is now tertiary referral.

My research interests include the investigation, diagnosis and management of patellofemoral instability and arthritis, the aetiology of anteromedial osteoarthritis of the knee, biological reconstructive solutions, robotics and kinematic alignment in compartmental and total knee replacement. I have pioneered and developed the indications for and practice of trochleoplasty and medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction in the treatment of patellofemoral instability. I have supervised trainees through doctoral theses into the aetiology of anteromedial osteoarthritis of the knee and the kinematics of the stable and unstable patellofemoral joint.

I have collaborated with world renowned scientists at the University of Bristol to develop novel stem cell therapies to treat meniscal tears, assisted in the development and application of robotic surgery to compartmental replacement and have worked on the design teams for replacement prostheses and instruments.

I am co-convener of the annual Bristol and Oxford unicompartmental knee arthritis symposium and have convened unicompartmental Masters meetings. I have organised multiple international cadaveric early intervention courses and the Bristol cadaveric knee ligament course.

I am a founder member and first president of the British Patellofemoral Society, dedicated to education in best practice and support for new surgeons in the field
